How to ground the protective capacitor in the distribution box

Ground the protective capacitor by connecting its terminals to the PE (protective earth) bar using a properly rated copper wire after ensuring the capacitor is fully discharged.

Step 1: Ensure Safety and De-energization

Before grounding, disconnect the capacitor from the power supply and allow it to discharge. Capacitor units with built-in discharge resistors typically require 5–10 minutes to reduce voltage to safe levels (less than 50–75 V) depending on the design . Never attempt to ground a capacitor immediately after disconnection.

Step 2: Identify Grounding Points

Open the distribution box and locate the PE bar or grounding plate, usually marked with "PE" or a grounding symbol . This is the main connection point for all protective grounding wires.

Step 3: Connect the Ground Wire

  • Use a yellow-green insulated copper wire with a cross-sectional area meeting local standards (e.g., 6 mm² internationally or 10 AWG in the US), .
  • Strip the wire end and securely attach it to the capacitor terminal or frame.
  • Connect the other end to the PE bar in the distribution box, tightening screws to ensure a firm connection .

Step 4: Ground All Components

If the distribution box contains multiple components requiring grounding, connect each to the PE bar using separate copper wires. Ensure all connections are tight and clearly marked for inspection and maintenance .

Step 5: Verify Grounding Resistance

The total grounding resistance should be less than 0.1–25 ohms, depending on system requirements . Use a suitable tester to confirm continuity and low resistance between the capacitor frame, PE bar, and the main grounding point.

Step 6: Additional Precautions

  • Short-circuit capacitor terminals before handling to prevent residual charge hazards .
  • Avoid touching frames or terminals until grounding is complete.
  • Ensure the grounding wire is continuous and free from damage or corrosion . By following these steps, the protective capacitor will be safely grounded, minimizing the risk of electric shock, equipment damage, or system faults.
