Grounding requirements for lighting distribution boxes

Lighting distribution boxes should be grounded using a low-impedance, earth-connected system with properly sized equipment grounding conductors, bonded metallic components, and a dedicated ground bus bar.

Key Grounding Principles

Equipment grounding conductors (EGCs) are essential for all circuits in a lighting distribution box. They provide a low-impedance path for fault currents, ensuring overcurrent protective devices operate quickly and safely, and help divert transient voltages such as lightning to the earth (NEC 250.122) .   • Avoid unnecessary bends or loops in grounding conductors to prevent side flashes during lightning events .
  • Use paint-piercing washers or dedicated bonding hardware for coated or powder-coated surfaces .
