Specifications of FRP Cable Trays

FRP cable trays are lightweight, corrosion-resistant, flame-retardant support systems designed according to ASTM, NEMA, and Indian safety standards, available in ladder and perforated types with specific load and environmental ratings.

Types and Design

FRP cable trays are primarily available in ladder type and perforated/channel type. Ladder trays consist of two longitudinal side rails connected by rungs, providing excellent ventilation and heat dissipation, suitable for multiple cables. Perforated trays have a solid or perforated bottom with integral side rails, ideal for fire-proof, moisture-proof, and dust-proof applications. Covers can be added for additional protection, with flat or peaked designs depending on environmental load requirements .

Material and Manufacturing

FRP trays are made from fiber-reinforced composites, typically using unsaturated polyester, vinylester, or epoxy resins. Pultrusion is the standard manufacturing process, where continuous glass fibers are pulled through a resin bath and heated die, producing consistent mechanical properties and high glass content (60–65% by weight). This ensures high strength, lightweight, corrosion resistance, and UV stability .

Mechanical and Environmental Specifications

  • Load Ratings: Determined by tray width, side runner height, and resin type. Common side runner weights range from 10 kg/m to 50 kg/m .
  • Corrosion and Chemical Resistance: All trays and accessories are resistant to chemicals, weather, and UV degradation .
  • Flame Retardancy: FRP trays are flame-retardant and comply with standards such as ASTM D635 and ASTM D2863 .
  • Electrical Properties: Non-conductive, non-magnetic, and anti-static with surface resistivity between 109 and 1012 ohms per square as per ASTM D257 .
  • Temperature and Insulation: Vinylester and epoxy resins offer higher heat and corrosion resistance, while phenolic resins provide low smoke and toxicity .

Accessories and Installation

  • Coupler Plates, Bolts, Nuts, and Washers: Stainless steel SS304 fasteners are used for connecting trays, elbows, tees, reducers, and covers .
  • Side Runners and Accessories: Designed with oblong holes for bolted connections; no welding is required.
  • Covers: Flat or peaked covers are used to protect cables from environmental loads, snow, or debris .

Standards and Compliance

FRP cable trays must comply with:

  • ASTM Standards: ASTM D257 (surface resistivity), ASTM D635 (flammability), ASTM D2863 (oxygen index)
  • NEMA FGI-1993: Fiber Glass Cable Tray System standards for safety and performance
  • Indian Safety Codes and Statutory Regulations: Ensuring compliance with local installation requirements .

Quality Assurance

Manufacturers are required to submit a Manufacturing Quality Plan, including type tests, inspection, and field quality plans. Acceptance tests include mechanical, electrical, and fire performance checks to ensure compliance with specifications . FRP cable trays are widely used in chemical plants, industrial facilities, commercial buildings, and residential applications due to their durability, lightweight nature, and resistance to corrosion, fire, and UV exposure . Proper selection of tray type, resin grade, and accessories ensures long-term performance and regulatory compliance.
