How Fiber Optic Cables Work

A fiber optic cable consists of a core, cladding, and buffer coating. The core is a thin strand of ultra-pure glass or plastic where light travels. Surrounding the core is the cladding, which has a slightly lower refractive index than the core. This difference causes total internal reflection, keeping the light signals confined within the core as they travel long distances. The buffer coating and outer jacket protect the delicate fibers from physical damage, moisture, and bending stress . Data is transmitted by converting electrical signals into light pulses using an optical transmitter. The light travels through the core, bouncing off the cladding, and is then converted back into electrical signals by a receiver at the other end .
