Working Principle of the Switching Power Supply Circuit of a CATV Optical Receiver

A switching power supply in a CATV optical receiver converts AC or DC input into stable DC output using high-frequency switching, PWM control, and rectification to efficiently power the receiver circuitry.

Main Components and Function

  1. Input Rectification and Filtering The AC mains or DC input is first rectified into a DC voltage using a bridge rectifier. This DC is then filtered with capacitors to reduce ripple and provide a smoother voltage for the switching stage .
  2. High-Frequency Inverter The rectified DC is switched on and off at high frequencies (typically tens to hundreds of kHz) using a high-speed transistor such as a MOSFET or bipolar transistor. This high-frequency switching allows the use of a smaller ferrite-core transformer, reducing size and weight while maintaining efficiency .
  3. Transformer and Isolation The high-frequency AC generated by the inverter passes through a transformer, which provides voltage step-down (or step-up) and galvanic isolation between input and output. In CATV applications, this ensures safety and stable operation over a wide input voltage range .
  4. Output Rectification and Filtering The secondary side of the transformer is rectified again using diodes and filtered with capacitors to produce a stable DC output. This output is then supplied to the CATV optical receiver circuitry .
  5. Control Circuit (PWM or PFM) The output voltage is continuously monitored by a control circuit. Using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), the duty cycle of the switching transistor is adjusted to maintain a constant output voltage despite variations in input voltage or load. Some designs may use Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) or a combination of both for efficiency and regulation .
  6. Protection and Auxiliary Circuits Auxiliary circuits provide startup power for the control IC and implement protection features such as overvoltage, overcurrent, and short-circuit protection. Detection circuits monitor operating parameters to ensure safe and reliable operation .
