Copper SFP modules, also called SFP to RJ45 transceivers, are hot-pluggable network modules that transmit data over standard copper Ethernet cables such as Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6a . Unlike traditional optical SFPs that rely on fiber optics and light signals, copper SFPs use electrical signals, making them suitable for short-reach connections, typically up to 100 meters for standard Gigabit Ethernet and around 30 meters for 10G copper SFPs . These modules are commonly used in switches, routers, and network interface cards (NICs) to support Ethernet protocols like 10/100/1000BASE-T.
In addition to copper SFPs, Direct Attach Copper (DAC) cables are another solution for connecting network devices over copper. DACs can be passive or active and are often used for short-distance, high-speed connections within racks or between adjacent racks . They are plug-and-play, energy-efficient, and avoid the need for optical signal conversion, making them cost-effective for intra-rack deployments .
While optical SFP modules themselves require fiber cables, copper-compatible SFP modules allow the same SFP form factor to operate over copper. Many network adapters and switches support a mix of optical SFPs, copper SFPs, and DAC cables on the same device, provided the modules are compatible with the hardware . Copper SFPs also support Power over Ethernet (PoE), enabling both data and power transmission over a single cable .
