Distribution Box Rail Mounting

Distribution boxes are typically mounted on DIN or top-hat rails (TS35) using standardized rails and mounting hardware to ensure secure, accessible, and compliant installations.

DIN and Mounting Rails

DIN rails, also called top-hat rails, are standardized metal profiles used to mount electrical and electronic components such as terminal blocks, relays, and power supplies inside distribution boxes . Common types include TS 15, TS 20 (C20), TS 27, TS 32, and TS 35, with TS 35 being the most widely used for industrial applications . Rails can be made from galvanized steel, aluminum, stainless steel, or plastic, and may be perforated or solid depending on mounting needs . End caps protect sharp edges and visually close off the rail ends, while mounting feet support components that cannot snap directly onto the rail .

Mounting Methods

Distribution boxes can be mounted in several ways depending on size, weight, and environment:

  • Wall Mounting: Suitable for light to medium-sized boxes; ensures easy access to breakers and fuses .
  • Rail Mounting: Components inside the box are attached to DIN rails using clips or screws; the box itself may also be secured to a support rail or top-hat rail .
  • Floor Pedestals or Skid Mounts: Used for heavy switchgear or when busbar extensions are required .
  • Pole Mounts: Ideal for outdoor feeders or limited space installations . DIN rail-mounted boxes often feature DIN clasps on the back for quick fastening to the predetermined rail position, simplifying installation and maintenance .

Installation Best Practices

  • Enclosure Selection: Match the box to environmental hazards (dust, water, UV, corrosive atmospheres) and select appropriate IP ratings (IP66/IP67 for outdoor, IP69K for high-pressure washdown), .
  • Clearances: Maintain manufacturer-recommended clearances for hinged doors and internal components to allow safe operation and maintenance .
  • Vibration Protection: Use isolation pads or dampers in high-vibration areas to protect wiring and terminal torque .
  • Cable Management: Pre-plan cable entry points, use modular gland plates, and provide mechanical strain relief to prevent conductor stress .
  • Component Arrangement: Mount heavier hardware lower to improve stability, group cables by function, and optimize wiring runs for cooling and accessibility .
  • Earthing: Establish a single low-impedance protective earth connecting the enclosure, busbar supports, and panels, verifying continuity before energization .

Summary

Rail mounting in distribution boxes ensures secure, modular, and maintainable installations. Using standardized DIN rails, proper enclosure selection, and careful planning of clearances, cable entry, and earthing will enhance safety, reliability, and compliance with industrial standards .
