Fiber Optic Patch Cord Manufacturing Process: From Assembly to 3D

The first step is selecting high-quality materials, including optical fibers, jackets, and connectors. Optical fibers must meet strict quality standards, while jackets—commonly PVC or LSZH—provide mechanical protection and environmental stability. Connector types such as SC, LC, ST, FC, or MTP are chosen based on application requirements, ensuring compatibility with network equipment and transmission needs .
The optical fiber is cut to the required length and stripped of its outer jacket and buffer coating. The fiber is then cleaned with alcohol to remove dust and residues. A protective layer is applied to the fiber to prevent damage, and the fiber is combined with the jacket to form the patch cord structure. Precision in this step is critical, as any deviation can affect signal quality .
The bare fiber is inserted into the connector ferrule, which is pre-filled with epoxy. The assembly is cured in an oven to secure the fiber. Connector housings and strain relief boots are then attached. This step requires meticulous attention to avoid micro-bubbles in the epoxy, which can degrade performance .
The ferrule end-face is polished using automatic machines to achieve a smooth surface, minimizing back reflection and insertion loss. Ultrasonic cleaning removes any remaining debris. End-faces are inspected under a microscope (typically 400x magnification) to ensure there are no scratches or contamination .
Each patch cord undergoes insertion loss (IL) and return loss (RL) testing to verify optical performance. Interferometers may be used to inspect the fiber for defects and ensure connector durability. This step ensures that the final product meets international standards and provides reliable signal transmission .
