How to wire a three-level distribution box

Wiring a three-level (three-phase) distribution box involves connecting the main supply to an MCCB, distributing each phase to MCBs, and properly linking neutral and earth for safe and balanced power distribution.

Overview

A three-phase distribution box (DB) is used to distribute electrical power efficiently across multiple circuits or floors in commercial, industrial, or multi-story buildings. It typically includes a main MCCB (Molded Case Circuit Breaker), three-pole MCBs for individual loads, neutral and earth busbars, and sometimes RCCBs for additional protection . Each phase carries AC current with a 120° phase shift, allowing balanced load distribution and reduced energy losses .

Step-by-Step Wiring Process

  1. Main Supply Connection
    • Bring the three-phase supply (L1, L2, L3) and neutral from the utility or main energy meter into the DB.
    • Connect the incoming lines to the main MCCB, which acts as the primary switch for the entire system .
  2. Phase Distribution
    • From the MCCB, connect each phase to the input terminals of the three-pole MCBs.
    • Use busbars to distribute power efficiently to multiple MCBs, especially in high-current or multi-story installations .
    • Ensure that each floor or section receives one phase to balance the load across L1, L2, and L3 .
  3. Neutral and Earth Connections
    • Connect the neutral wire from the main supply to a neutral busbar.
    • Connect all MCB neutral outputs to this busbar.
    • Connect the earth wire to an earth busbar, linking all protective devices and metallic enclosures to ensure safety in case of faults .
  4. Optional RCCB Installation
    • If residual current protection is required, install an RCCB after the main MCCB.
    • Connect the output of the RCCB to the MCBs, ensuring both phase and neutral pass through the RCCB .
  5. Load Connections
    • Connect each load to the output terminals of the MCBs.
    • For single-phase loads, connect one phase and neutral; for three-phase loads, connect all three phases and neutral as required .
  6. Labeling and Testing
    • Clearly label each MCB for the corresponding load or floor.
    • Test the system for continuity, correct phase sequence, and proper operation of protective devices before energizing the DB.

Safety Considerations

  • Always switch off the main supply before wiring.
  • Use properly rated MCCBs and MCBs according to load requirements.
  • Ensure tight and secure connections to prevent overheating.
  • Maintain phase balance to avoid overloading a single phase.
  • Follow local electrical codes (IEC, NEC, or regional standards) for installation .
