How to connect the BBU pigtail fiber

To connect a fiber optic pigtail to a BBU, you need to fusion splice the bare fiber end of the pigtail to the incoming fiber, then plug the factory-terminated connector into the ONT or BBU optical port.

Step 1: Prepare the Fiber Pigtail and Incoming Cable

  • Strip the protective coating from the bare fiber end of the pigtail using a fiber stripper, exposing the glass core without nicking it .
  • Clean the exposed fiber with isopropyl alcohol wipes to remove dust and oils .
  • Similarly, prepare the incoming fiber cable by stripping and cleaning it to ensure a low-loss splice .

Step 2: Fusion Splicing

  • Use a fusion splicer to align the bare fiber of the pigtail with the incoming fiber .
  • The splicer will melt the fiber ends together, creating a continuous optical path with minimal signal loss .
  • After splicing, place the joint in a protective splice sleeve or tray to prevent damage.

Step 3: Connecting to the BBU/ONT

  • Take the factory-terminated connector on the other end of the pigtail and insert it into the optical port of the ONT or BBU .
  • Ensure the connector clicks securely and is free of dust or debris. Cleaning the connector before insertion is recommended to avoid back reflection or signal loss .

Step 4: Power and Network Connections

  • Connect the BBU to its power source and ensure it is properly seated in the enclosure .
  • If applicable, connect the Ethernet cable from the ONT to the communications provider's router and the telephone cable to the voice network .
  • Verify that the BBU is functioning correctly; a red warning light may indicate a battery replacement is needed.

Step 5: Testing

  • Use an optical power meter or OTDR to test the splice and ensure low insertion loss and proper signal transmission .
  • Confirm that the ONT and BBU are operational and that voice and data services are active. By following these steps, you ensure a reliable, low-loss connection between the fiber pigtail and the BBU, maintaining network integrity and performance. Proper preparation, splicing, and cleaning are critical to avoid signal degradation and ensure long-term reliability .
