Standard 12-Color Sequence

The TIA-598-C standard defines a 12-color sequence for identifying individual fibers in a multi-fiber cable. The sequence is:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown
  5. Slate
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose
  12. Aqua This means the blue fiber is always fiber #1 in any standard 12-fiber group, making it the starting point for identification during splicing, termination, or troubleshooting operations .

High-Count Cables

For cables with more than 12 fibers (e.g., 24, 48, 96 fibers), the 12-color sequence repeats. To maintain unique identification:

  • Repeated sequences may include stripes or markings on the fibers to distinguish groups .
  • In loose-tube cables, the buffer tubes themselves also follow the 12-color sequence, and fibers inside each tube repeat the same sequence .
  • Example: In a 24-fiber cable, fibers 1–12 follow the standard sequence (blue first), and fibers 13–24 repeat the sequence with additional markings to differentiate them.
