Working Principle of Liquid Level Fiber Optic Sensor

Fiber optic liquid level sensors measure the precise level of liquids using light-based principles, offering high accuracy, safety, and reliability in challenging environments.

Working Principle

Fiber optic liquid level sensors operate by detecting changes in light transmission, reflection, or refraction within an optical fiber. One common method uses Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG), where microscopic alterations in the fiber core reflect specific wavelengths of light. As the liquid level changes, hydrostatic pressure or physical strain alters the grating spacing, shifting the reflected wavelength. This shift is measured by an interrogator system to determine the exact liquid level . Another approach relies on total internal reflection, where the presence or absence of liquid changes the light intensity escaping the fiber, indicating the liquid level . Some systems, like NASA's Fiber Optic Sensing System (FOSS), use a resistive heater to detect the cooling rate of fiber segments in liquid versus gas, providing highly precise measurements .
