Switch NAS Port Aggregation

Port aggregation combines multiple NAS network ports into a single logical link to increase bandwidth, provide redundancy, and enable load balancing.

What is NAS Port Aggregation?

NAS port aggregation, also called link aggregation, bonding, or trunking, allows multiple Ethernet ports on your NAS to function as a single logical interface. This improves network throughput and provides failover in case one port or cable fails. Most modern NAS devices, including Synology models, support multiple aggregation modes such as Adaptive Load Balancing, IEEE 802.3ad (LACP), and Balance XOR depending on your switch capabilities and network setup .

Common Aggregation Modes

  • Adaptive Load Balancing (ALB): Works without switch support for link aggregation. It balances traffic and provides failover automatically. Recommended for simple setups where the switch does not support LACP .
  • IEEE 802.3ad Dynamic Link Aggregation (LACP): Requires LACP-enabled switches. Provides dynamic negotiation, load balancing, and redundancy. Ideal for enterprise or high-performance networks .
  • Balance XOR / Static Link Aggregation: Requires static configuration on the switch. Traffic is distributed based on MAC addresses or IPs. Provides redundancy but lacks dynamic negotiation .

Switch Configuration Best Practices

  1. Enable LACP on the switch if using dynamic aggregation. Both ends (NAS and switch) must agree on the aggregation settings .
  2. Use the same VLAN or LAN for all aggregated ports to avoid network segmentation issues .
  3. Configure port attributes consistently: speed, duplex mode (full duplex only), and link type (trunk, hybrid, or access) must match across all aggregated ports .
  4. Order of configuration: Start with the most downstream switch connected to the NAS, then move upstream to other switches or the core network .
  5. MC-LAG (Multi-Chassis Link Aggregation): For high-availability setups, two switches can act as a single logical unit, allowing NAS connections to both switches simultaneously for redundancy and load balancing .

Practical Considerations

  • Throughput: Aggregation increases total bandwidth but does not necessarily double the speed for a single client connection. It is most effective when multiple clients access the NAS simultaneously .
  • Fault tolerance: If one port or cable fails, traffic automatically shifts to the remaining links, minimizing downtime .
  • Cable management: Ensure all cables are properly connected and labeled to avoid confusion during troubleshooting.

Setting Up on a Synology NAS

  1. Go to Control Panel > Network > Network Interface.
  2. Click Create > Create Bond.
  3. Select the desired aggregation mode (ALB, LACP, or Balance XOR).
  4. Apply settings and verify that the NAS shows a single bonded interface with multiple active ports .
