Fiber Optic Cable Manufacturer Production Flowchart

Fiber optic cable production follows a multi-step process from silica preform creation to final cable testing and packaging.

Overview of Production Flow

  1. Raw Material Preparation
    • Silica Selection: Ultra-pure silica (SiO₂) is chosen for its light-transmitting properties.
    • Preform Creation: Silica particles are deposited inside a hollow tube or onto a solid rod and fused to form a glass preform several centimeters thick and up to two meters long .
  2. Fiber Drawing
    • The preform is heated in a furnace above 2000°C.
    • Glass is drawn into thin fibers with a precise diameter of 125 microns (±1 micron).
    • Continuous monitoring ensures uniformity and minimal signal loss .
  3. Primary Coating
    • A protective polymer coating is applied immediately after drawing to prevent scratches and microbends.
    • UV-curable coatings are commonly used for rapid curing and durability .
  4. Fiber Coloring
    • Fibers are colored using UV-curable inks for identification.
    • Standard color codes are applied according to industry or MIIT standards .
  5. Secondary Coating / Loose Tube Extrusion
    • Fibers are inserted into loose tubes filled with protective grease.
    • Argon or other inert gases may be used to prevent oxidation.
    • Annealing is performed to relieve residual stress, with controlled temperature cycles ranging from 300°C to 1600°C .
  6. Stranding and Cabling
    • Multiple fibers are stranded together with strength members (e.g., aramid yarn) to form a cable core.
    • The stranding process ensures flexibility and mechanical strength .
  7. Jacketing
    • An outer protective jacket is extruded over the stranded fibers.
    • Materials are selected for environmental resistance, including UV, moisture, and fire protection .
  8. Quality Control and Testing
    • Optical and mechanical tests are performed, including attenuation, tensile strength, and diameter measurements.
    • OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer) testing ensures signal integrity .
  9. Spooling, Bundling, and Packaging
    • Finished cables are wound onto reels or spools.
    • Labels, documentation, and protective packaging are applied for shipping .

Key Considerations

  • Environmental Control: Cleanrooms, temperature, and humidity regulation are critical during fiber drawing and coating .
  • Equipment: Specialized machinery is required for preform fabrication, fiber drawing, coating, stranding, and testing .
  • Safety and Ergonomics: Factory layout should optimize workflow, minimize material transit, and comply with safety regulations . This flowchart represents the end-to-end production of fiber optic cables, ensuring high-speed, low-loss, and durable cables suitable for telecommunications, data centers, and industrial applications.
