What is the working principle of the light-sensitive power-off module

A light-sensitive power-off module uses a photoresistor (LDR) to detect light intensity and a relay to switch off connected devices when sufficient light is present.

Core Components

  1. Light Dependent Resistor (LDR): A semiconductor device whose resistance decreases as light intensity increases. Common materials include cadmium sulfide (CdS) and cadmium selenide (CdSe) that exhibit photoconductivity, allowing electrons to move from the valence band to the conduction band when illuminated, increasing conductivity and lowering resistance .
  2. Relay: An electromagnetic switch that controls the power to the connected load. It is activated or deactivated based on the control circuit's output.
  3. Control Circuitry: Processes the LDR signal and determines whether the relay should be energized or de-energized.

Working Mechanism

  1. Light Detection: The LDR continuously monitors ambient light. In bright conditions, its resistance drops significantly (to a few hundred ohms), signaling the circuit that there is enough light. In darkness or dim light, the resistance rises (tens of kilo-ohms to mega-ohms), indicating insufficient light .
  2. Signal Processing: The control circuit interprets the LDR's resistance change. When the light intensity exceeds a preset threshold, the circuit decides to cut power to the relay coil. Conversely, when light falls below the threshold, the circuit supplies voltage to the relay coil.
  3. Relay Switching: When the relay coil is energized (low light), it generates a magnetic field that closes the internal contacts, completing the circuit and powering the connected device. When the coil is de-energized (bright light), the magnetic field collapses, the contacts open, and the device turns off .
