Power meter measurement of optical loss

Optical loss is measured by comparing the optical power at the source and at the receiving end using a calibrated optical power meter and appropriate light source.

Equipment Needed

To measure optical loss, you need:

  • Optical power meter (OPM) with a calibrated photodiode sensor suitable for your fiber type and wavelength .
  • Light source: LED for multimode fibers (850/1300 nm) or laser for single-mode fibers (1310/1550 nm), .
  • Launch cables and adapters to connect the source and meter to the fiber.
  • Cleaning tools for connectors to prevent measurement errors .

Measurement Procedure

  1. Warm up the meter: Turn on the optical power meter and allow it to stabilize for a minute or two .
  2. Set the wavelength: Match the meter's wavelength to the light source to ensure accurate readings .
  3. Clean connectors: Use lint-free wipes or click-to-clean tools to remove dust or debris from all fiber ends .
  4. Connect the fiber:
    • For single-ended measurement, connect the launch cable to the source and the fiber under test to the meter. This measures loss at connectors and fiber segments individually .
    • For double-ended measurement, use a receive cable at the meter end to measure total end-to-end loss, including all connectors and splices .
  5. Read the power: The meter displays optical power in dBm. Record the reading at the source (reference) and at the receiving end.
  6. Calculate loss: Optical loss (in dB) is the difference between the reference power and the received power: Loss (dB) = Power at source (dBm) – Power at receiver (dBm) .

Best Practices

  • Consistent setup: Ensure the test environment and fiber conditions mimic actual operating conditions .
  • Calibration: Regularly calibrate the optical power meter to maintain accuracy .
  • Connector inspection: Always inspect and clean connectors before testing to avoid false high-loss readings .
  • Use proper adapters: Ensure the meter and source connectors match the fiber type to minimize coupling loss . By following these steps, you can accurately measure optical loss in fiber optic systems, whether for patch cords, splices, or installed links.
