Function of Optical Fiber Cables

Optical fiber cables are primarily used for high-speed data transmission in telecommunications, internet networks, and cable television, as well as in medical imaging, industrial monitoring, and military communications . They carry information as light pulses rather than electrical signals, allowing for higher bandwidths and longer transmission distances compared to traditional copper cables . Principle of Optical Fiber Cables

The operation of optical fiber cables is based on total internal reflection. Each fiber consists of three main layers:

  • Core: The innermost layer where light travels.
  • Cladding: Surrounds the core and has a slightly lower refractive index, causing light to reflect back into the core.
  • Coating/Buffer: Protects the fiber from physical damage and environmental factors . When light enters the core at an angle greater than the critical angle, it is reflected repeatedly along the length of the fiber without escaping, effectively guiding the light through the cable . This allows signals to travel over long distances with minimal attenuation and immune to electromagnetic interference .

Types of Optical Fibers

  • Single-mode fibers: Very narrow core, allowing only one light path, ideal for long-distance communication.
  • Multimode fibers: Wider core, supporting multiple light paths, suitable for short-distance links and high-power applications .
