How to wire the distribution box and conduit

To connect wiring to a distribution box via conduit, select the appropriate conduit type, cut and prepare it, attach it securely to the box using the correct fittings, and pull the wires through safely.

Step 1: Select Conduit and Materials

Choose the conduit type based on your installation needs: PVC, EMT (Electrical Metallic Tubing), or rigid metal conduit. Ensure the conduit diameter matches the knockout or hub size on the distribution box. You will also need connectors, locknuts, PVC cement (for PVC), and basic tools such as a hacksaw, deburring tool, screwdriver, and measuring tape .

Step 2: Prepare the Distribution Box

Identify the knockout or hub where the conduit will enter. Remove the knockout carefully using a screwdriver, hammer, or knockout tool to create a clean opening. Ensure the box is properly mounted and grounded according to electrical codes .

Step 3: Cut and Prepare the Conduit

Measure the required length of conduit from the distribution box to the wiring source. Cut the conduit straight using a hacksaw or PVC cutter. Deburr the edges to remove sharp ridges that could damage wires during pulling .

Step 4: Attach the Conduit to the Box

  • For metal conduit (EMT, RMC, IMC): Use a set-screw, compression, or threaded connector to secure the conduit to the box. Tighten a locknut inside the box to ensure a firm connection .
  • For PVC conduit: Use a male adapter with PVC cement to bond the conduit to the box. Allow the cement to cure for a strong, waterproof seal .

Step 5: Pull the Wires

Use fish tape or a wire-pulling tool to guide the wires through the conduit into the distribution box. Ensure wires are not twisted or damaged during the pull. Leave enough slack inside the box for connections and future maintenance .

Step 6: Final Checks

  • Verify that all connections are secure and the conduit is firmly attached.
  • Ensure proper grounding continuity through metal conduits.
  • Confirm that the installation complies with local electrical codes for safety and reliability . Following these steps ensures a safe, organized, and code-compliant connection of wiring to a distribution box via conduit, protecting both the conductors and the overall electrical system.
