Fiber Optic Cable Reel Storage Standards

Fiber optic cable reels should be stored upright in a clean, dry, and controlled environment, with proper handling to prevent physical damage, moisture ingress, and signal degradation.

Reel Storage and Positioning

  • Upright Storage: Always store reels standing on their flanges or supported through the center arbor. Avoid laying reels on their sides, as this can cause cable wraps to cascade, tangle, or loosen over time, leading to potential damage during installation .
  • Surface Requirements: Place reels on flat, solid surfaces or dedicated rack systems. Avoid contact with damp surfaces, dirt, loose gravel, or uncovered outdoor areas for extended periods .
  • Indoor Preference: Indoor storage is preferred to protect reels from moisture, UV exposure, and temperature fluctuations. If outdoor storage is unavoidable, use solid wooden reels, protective covers, and rotate stock every 30–60 days to prevent deterioration .
  • Reel Protection: Maintain the integrity of wood slats on reels and use protective caps on cable ends to prevent moisture and contaminants from entering .

Environmental Conditions

  • Temperature and Humidity: Maintain storage temperatures between 10°C and 30°C (50°F to 86°F) and relative humidity below 85% to prevent jacket degradation, moisture ingress, and fiber attenuation .
  • UV and Contaminant Protection: Keep reels away from direct sunlight and airborne particulates. Use sealed packaging, dust caps, or protective sleeves for pre-terminated cables .

Handling Guidelines

  • Lifting and Transport: Use forklifts with forks cradling both flanges, hoist reels via a shaft through the arbor, or employ spreader beams with chains/wire ropes to prevent flange damage during lifting .
  • Rolling and Payout: Roll reels only in the direction indicated by the arrow on the reel. When pulling cable for installation, ensure the arrow points opposite to the reel rotation to avoid backbends .
  • Bend Radius: Adhere to the manufacturer's minimum bend radius—typically at least 10 times the cable diameter for static bends and 20 times for dynamic bends—to prevent microbends or macrobends that reduce signal performance .

Inventory and Maintenance

  • Labeling and Traceability: Keep reel tags intact for identification, including cable type, fiber count, length, and manufacturing date .
  • Rotation and Inspection: Implement first-in, first-out inventory rotation. Regularly inspect reels for physical damage, moisture ingress, or compromised packaging .
  • Avoid Overloading: Do not stack reels in a way that applies excessive pressure or weight, and separate armored and non-armored cables to prevent crushing . By following these guidelines, fiber optic cables can maintain their structural integrity, optical performance, and longevity, reducing the risk of installation issues and network downtime .
