What type of wire should be used for a 20A distribution box
The most commonly recommended wire size for a 20 amp circuit is 12 gauge copper wire (12 AWG). It has sufficient ampacity to handle 20 amps safely under normal temperature conditions. Copper is preferred due to its high conductivity, reliability, and durability. For most 20 amp circuits, you'll need 12 AWG copper wire or 10 AWG aluminum wire, but the complete answer depends on several critical factors that could save you thousands in future electrical work. This wire size is the minimum acceptable standard, mandated by the National Electrical Code (NEC). The 12 AWG wire is physically thicker than the 14 AWG wire.
